A Guyton woman was arrested on multiple charges Monday night after she reportedly fled from an accident she caused and led Effingham County sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase while driving under the influence.

Deputies were called to a report of a hit-and-run at the intersection of Courthouse and Midland roads shortly after 9 p.m., according to ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor. A witness described a black SUV that fled the scene after hitting the other vehicle from behind.

A deputy spotted the SUV on Little McCall Road and attempted a traffic stop. However, the driver, Rebecca Wickman, 30, failed to stop and led the deputy on a pursuit, Ehsanipoor said.

Wickman exceeded speeds of 85 miles per hour during the pursuit, according to the ECSO. Once the chase extended into the Guyton area, deputies performed a PIT (pursuit intervention technique) maneuver on Magnolia Street, spinning Wickman’s car sideways and causing it to stop.

The dashboard camera in the deputy’s car showed that Wickman used her turn signals as she sped down several roads. However, she was less courteous after deputies stopped her with the PIT maneuver, refusing their commands to get out of the SUV.

“They had to use a baton to break open the passenger-side window to get her out,” Ehsanipoor said.

Deputies found prescription pills and wine bottles in Wickman’s vehicle and “she was definitely under the influence,” Ehsanipoor said. He added that Wickman had just been arrested for driving under the influence “within the past couple months.”

“She was at fault in the hit-and-run and she was under the influence. That’s why we believe she fled,” Ehsanipoor said.

Wickman was charged with hit-and-run, fleeing and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, interference with government property, reckless driving and DUI.

The victim of the hit-and-run was treated for minor injuries. Wickman was taken to the hospital to be checked out before being taken to the Effingham County Jail.
