An Eden man will serve 20 years in prison for shooting at two Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies last year.
Eric Ramon Harrison pled guilty Friday morning to two counts of aggravated assault, just before the start of the second day of his trial in the case. He was charged with using a .32-caliber pistol to fire at two deputies June 8, 2014.
Deputies responded to a call about a domestic disturbance, when multiple callers told 911 there was a man in a house with a gun. According to reports, deputies were trying to get Harrison to leave the house when he walked outside and shot at them. Harrison later surrendered after a brief standoff.
Harrison was indicted on two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of attempt to commit murder, three counts of possession of a firearm by a felon and one count of simple battery-family violence. He had been convicted in Morgan County in 1998 of violating the Georgia Controlled Substances Act.
Jury selection for the trial was held Nov. 10, and the trial was set for Thursday and Friday. Harrison entered a guilty plea following an in limine motion hearing.
His sentence on the second count of aggravated assault will run concurrently with his 20-year term for the first count. He also will be credited for time served since June 8, 2014.
Harrison could have faced as many as 130 years in prison.
