Firefighters fill the boots for MDA

Firefighters in Rincon and Guyton battle more than fires. This past summer, firefighters teamed up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for the 2010 “Boot Drive.”

The firefighters spent multiple weekends in the summer heat trying to “fill the boot.” These “Boot Drives” offer the community a chance to donate money that will be used in the battle against neuromuscular diseases.

This year the community embraced the efforts of the Rincon Fire Department by raising $7,226, a $2,426 increase from 2009. The Guyton Fire Department raised $2,500, a $1,000 increase from 2009.

The proceeds collected from the fire departments will aid local children and adults affected by neuromuscular diseases by providing wheelchairs, leg braces, clinical visits, support groups, and a chance for children to attend the local MDA camp held in Rincon.
