The trial of an Effingham County man accused of killing his father and brother is on hold again.

Ogeechee Judicial Circuit Judge Gates Peed has ordered a continuation for jury selection in Craig Heidt’s upcoming trial in the 2008 deaths of his father, longtime Effingham realtor and developer Philip Heidt, and his brother, Carey Heidt. Craig Heidt also has been charged with aggravated assault in the wounding of his mother, Linda Heidt.

Authorities allege that Craig Heidt shot and killed his father and brother and wounded his mother in Philip and Linda Heidt’s home in August 2008.

He was arrested in May 2009.

Jury selection was scheduled to begin Aug. 16. But defense attorney Dow Bonds has a pending case in U.S. District Court in Savannah. Federal cases take precedence over state cases.

Bonds is representing Gabriel Florez and jury selection in that trial is slated to begin Aug. 16. Florez is charged with money laundering and possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana.

This is the second delay in jury selection for the trial. Originally, the trial was scheduled to begin in May, but Bonds asked for a delay so he could tend to his mother. Bonds is her sole caregiver and she was beginning treatments for cancer.
