By a 5-0 vote Monday night, the Rincon City Council adopted a new, sweeping alcohol ordinance that calls for restaurants wishing to serve liquor by the drink to make at least 55 percent of their gross receipts from the sale of food.

Council members approved a second reading of the ordinance and made two minor changes in it not pertaining to the widely debated 55-45 provision. With the approval of the second reading, the ordinance goes into effect in 10 days.

Rincon can begin taking applications for liquor licenses as early as Tuesday.
