Public help leads to arrest of fleeing driver

SPRINGFIELD -- The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office thanked the public Monday for information that led to the location and arrest of Thomas Schmidtt on Saturday.

Schmidt was the driver of the vehicle that led Deputy Karyn Witherington on a high-speed chase that led into the Ogeechee River last week.

Schmidt was located after numerous tips came in about his whereabouts. He led deputies on a short foot pursuit before being apprehended.

He was booked into the Effingham County Jail where he remains.

Schmidt was charged with failure to obey stop sign, operation of unregistered vehicle, expired license, driving while expired, failure to maintain lane, driving within a median, fleeing and attempting to allude, acquiring license plate for purpose of concealing identity, improper lane change, speeding, reckless driving, improper passing, passing in a no-passing zone, removing or affixing LP to conceal identity and obstruction.
