Three deaths reported on states roads during holiday

Three people were killed on the state’s roads during the Christmas holiday travel period as of Monday afternoon, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

The Christmas holiday travel period ran from Dec. 23 at 6 p.m. to Dec. 26 at midnight. As of Monday afternoon, the Georgia State Patrol had investigated 204 crashes, which resulted in 132 injuries.

Last year, GSP troopers investigated 351 crashes, which led to 280 injuries and three deaths over the Christmas holiday travel period. Statewide last year, there were three deaths and 387 injuries from 641 accidents.

The New Year’s holiday travel period begins Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. and runs through Jan. 2 at midnight. For the 2010 New Year’s holiday, state troopers investigated 320 crashes, leading to 270 injuries and seven deaths.

During 2010 New Year’s holiday period patrols, 174 people were arrested for driving under the influence.
