Time running out for new title ad valorem tax opt-in

ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Revenue wants to remind citizens that if you purchased a motor vehicle on or after Jan. 1, 2012, and prior to March 1, 2013, you have the opportunity to opt in to the new title ad valorem tax. However, this expires at the close of business on Feb. 28, 2014.

The opt-in period provides an opportunity to do a comparison between the current annual ad valorem tax, normally paid on your birthday, and the new one-time tax. You may be eligible to opt in to the new tax and get credit for sales tax and annual ad valorem taxes you have already paid.

If citizens need help comparing the various options, visit the Web site at http://onlinemvd.dor.ga.gov/Tap/welcome.aspx.

If you choose to opt in, visit your local county tag office on or before Feb. 28 so that a county tag agent may assist you. The Effingham County Tag Office is located at 901 N. Pine St., Springfield and is open from 8:30 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Take all pertinent documentation with you to the tag office (e.g. a bill of sale).
