The South Effingham girls struggled to slow down Woodward Academy and fell to the War Eagles 82-37 in the first round of the Class 6A girls’ basketball state championships Feb. 21.

The Mustangs, the only county basketball team to advance to state, ended their season with a 9-20 record.

South made the state tournament by placing fourth in the Region 2-6A tournament, setting up its matchup with the state’s eighth-ranked team.

Woodward, the Region 3 champion, outscored the Mustangs by 10 or more in every quarter. The War Eagles also finished with 25 steals.

Z Williams led the six Woodward girls in double figures with 18 points.

The War Eagles (24-5) defeated St. Pius X 89-40 in the second round. It was their 18th straight win at home.
