Tough Road Ahead: South Effingham Preps for Loaded 2025 Schedule

GUYTON, Ga. – Same opponents, same results? South Effingham coach Loren Purvis hopes for something different when looking at the Mustangs’ 2025 football schedule.

South, winless last season, opens in the Corral with New Hampstead on Aug. 15. Along the way, the Mustangs will play three schools that won 10 or more games, including Class A Division I state champion Toombs County (13-1) in Lyons on Aug. 29.

Always circled on the calendar will be the annual clash with county rival Effingham County High School in Guyton on Sept. 19.

SEHS’ two non-region games and the eight region games flip-flopped home and away, differentiating the 2024 schedule from the 2025 schedule.

Finding wins for the Mustangs will be challenging again.

“There’s a lot of work to be done between now and August,” said Purvis on the first day of spring practice.

South struggled to stop teams a year ago, but should benefit in seeing new opposing starting quarterbacks in its first three games. New Hampstead graduated Ra’Shawn Truell, a 3,000-yard passer who committed to Savannah State.

Toombs County, next up, also graduated its starting quarterback TJ Stanley (Region 3-1A Division I player of the year) who is headed to Georgia State.

And Lakeside, the Mustangs’ Sept. 12 opponent, graduated dual-threat quarterback Ty Jones, the Region 1-5A Player of the Year.

SEHS will be seeking to end a five-game losing streak to rival Effingham County in Game 4. The Rebels won last season 47-0 but only have three starters returning on defense.

Evans and Greenbrier follow during the next two weeks.

The Mustangs get a break in travel and will only have to bus to the Augusta area once for its games against Lakeside, Evans and Greenbrier.

The schedule makers have South on the road for three of its final four games, including twice heading to Glynn County Stadium for clashes with Glynn Academy on Oct. 10 and a trick-or-treat Halloween game with defending region champion Brunswick on Oct. 31.

Between trips to Brunswick, the Mustangs will play host to Bradwell Institute on Oct. 17 and travel to Statesboro on Oct. 24.

South’s closest game last season came against Bradwell. The Mustangs trailed by three entering the fourth quarter before losing 38-27.

“I hope some of the work shows (in wins) this year considering how hard (the players) work,” Purvis said.
