The Effingham County Board of Education accepted the resignation of Vera Jones on Thursday night.
Jones has served on the board since November 2002. She has served as the board chairperson since January 2007.
“I sent in my resignation on the day I moved,” Jones said.
She moved to a home outside of District 5 on July 9.
She plans to stay involved, even though she is no longer a board member.
Superintendent Randy Shearouse thanked Jones for her years of service and presented Jones a plaque for her service on the board.
“We’ll miss her very much,” Shearouse said.
The members discussed appointing Vickie Decker to fill the vacancy. Decker is the only person qualified to run for the District 5 seat in November. The board plans to vote to appoint Decker and have her sworn in at the next meeting on Aug. 6.
