SEHS FFA takes home multiple wins at competitions

The South Effingham High School FFA horse judging team competed at the State Horse Judging Career Development Event at Fort Valley State University on Feb. 9. There were 39 teams in their division (senior division).

Team members are Madison Daughdrill, Sarah Lanham, Jessi Phillips and Leslie Lamb.

The team placed first for Area IV, first for Central Region, and fourth overall in the State.

Additionally, Madison Daughdrill placed individually: first for Area IV, first for Central Region and fifth overall in the state. These students will be recognized at the Area Awards Rally on May 7 in Swainsboro.

The SEHS FFA poultry judging teams competed in the Region Poultry Evaluation CDE in Eastman on Feb. 13. The senior team placed third overall. Team members were Harrold Wheeler, Chris Farlow, Morgan Rushing and Brandon Mew.  The SEHS junior team placed second overall. Team members were Caroline Sapp, Malissa Powell, Marissa Powell, and Blake Quick. Additionally, Sapp placed first overall individually for Area IV. The junior team will advance to the State Competition held in Athens on March 23.

The Livestock Show Team competed on Feb. 20-23 in Perry at the Georgia Junior National Livestock Show. Logan Jett, Lilly Conner, and John Conner represented SEHS in the Beef Heifer Show. Lilly won third place in the Shorthorn class. The group also won Reserve Grand Champion Herdsman.

SEMS students

Ashtian Kessler and Dusty Jett, and SEHS students Madison Wilson, Dakota Scott, Ryan Weredyk, Gerald Kessler, and Jessi Phillips competed in the Market Hog Show. The hog show was the largest one in history, with a record number of 1,781 entries.

In showmanship, Jett, won third place overall for seventh grade. Wilson took home 10th place for 11th-grade showmanship, and Scott won sixth place for 10th-grade showmanship.

For the Market Barrow show on Friday, Gerald Kessler’s hog came in ninth place for his weight class and Dakota Scott won first place in his class.

Ryan Weredyk came in fifth place for his weight class in the Market Gilt show on Saturday.

The hog exhibitors also won Reserve Grand Champion Herdsman.
