SAVANNAH — Since President Obama’s visit to Savannah Technical College earlier this year, interest in the college’s solar energy program has skyrocketed.

To meet the growing demand, STC will offer courses leading to the Technical Certificate in Photovoltaic Systems Repair and Installation in the afternoons beginning fall quarter.

“We’re going to be teaching Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 1:45 to 4 p.m.,” said Lester Wiggins, department head and instructor of Electrical Construction and Maintenance. “We’re confident this will open up more opportunities for students to enroll.”

The program is the first of its kind to be offered at a public college in Georgia and featured prominently in President Obama’s green energy speech delivered from the Savannah Technical College auditorium to a packed house on March 2.

It has attracted students from all over the southeastern U.S. and has drawn international attention from South Africa.

Fall quarter starts Sept. 29; registration will begin in early August.

Those interested in the program can contact Lester Wiggins at lwiggins@savannahtech.edu or (912) 443-5861.
