The 300-foot high county communications tower by Effingham Hospital came down Monday as the county prepares for the installation of a new helicopter-landing pad for LifeStar. Larry Spell, area manger for Site Source South, said his workers, Jimmy Akers and Steven Pierre, were taking the old tower down in five joint sections and planned to have the job done by early afternoon. Spell said this was an old communications tower used by the hospital and the state patrol but that it was now a redundant system.
