The Effingham YMCA is hosting a dedication ceremony and reception for the named Ann Purcell Connector on June 30th at 10 a.m. in recognition of the efforts of state Department of Transportation 1st Congressional District board member Ann Purcell. The ceremony will be hosted at the Effingham YMCA at 1224 Patriot Drive in Rincon. The event will feature an official dedication and welcome address from YMCA of Coastal Georgia’s District Vice President Krystal McGee followed by a reception.

The Effingham YMCA is a result of the determination and passion of former state Rep. Purcell, Pete Lancaster and Toby Tyler. The driving force behind the establishment of the Effingham YMCA in 1999, Purcell, Lancaster and Tyler lobbied to bring the mission of the YMCA to Rincon. After a strong response from members, a need for a larger space presented itself. Purcell, Lancaster and Tyler were again vital in the expansion of the YMCA to its current, larger facility in 2007.

In gratitude for her efforts, the Y has named a road on the facility in her honor. The Ann Purcell Connector will connect Peter Lancaster Lane and Toby Tyler Way in front of the Effingham YMCA facility, honoring the trio’s commitment to the YMCA in Effingham County.

“Ann Purcell has shown a tremendous amount of allegiance to the YMCA,” said Joel Smoker, president and CEO of the YMCA of Coastal Georgia. “We are honored to recognize the efforts she has and continues to make to improve our community and support our organization.”
