ECSO issues alert on burglaries

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office is urging citizens to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods following a recent string of burglaries in both northern and southern Effingham County.

Over the past two weeks, several homes in Effingham County have been burglarized during the daytime hours. The suspects are forcing their way into homes and taking items such as jewelry and electronics.

A suspicious dark in color mid size pickup truck has been seen in the area of several of the incidents in the northern Effingham County. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and secure their homes.

Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie has increased patrols in the targeted areas. Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to contact the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office at754-3449.

“We would rather be called and not needed than be needed and not called,” Sheriff McDuffie said.

Two men were arrested Tuesday in Eden after a domestic dispute led to a standoff. Deputies say George Driggers, 47, threatened his girlfriend and law enforcement with a gun, then barricaded himself inside a home. His father, Alford Driggers, 80, was also charged for allegedly threatening deputies.
