A former Effingham County Jail officer has been arrested for improper contact with an inmate following a six-month-long probe conducted by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.

David Williford, 50, of Clyo has been charged with one count of sexual assault against a person in custody. Williford resigned in February during both an internal and criminal investigation after reports of misconduct in the Effingham County Jail.

Williford turned himself into investigators late Tuesday afternoon. He admitted he had improper contact with an inmate.

The investigation revealed Williford had inappropriate contact with a female jail inmate.

“We will not tolerate any behavior which is not in accordance with our professional standards,” ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor said. “Any employee at this office found to be in violation of Georgia law will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
