Waugh indicted for June fatal crash

An Effingham County grand jury has indicted a man accused of a causing the death of a 4-year-old boy in a June traffic wreck.

Robert Kenneth Waugh of Bloomingdale was indicted Friday on nine charges stemming from an accident that claimed the life of Owen Rivers, 4. Rivers’ mother Adrianna Flowers was injured seriously in the wreck. She suffered two broken legs and a broken knee cap.

According to investigators, Waugh was driving his 2006 Jeep Liberty south on Highway 17 when he went into the northbound lane, striking the car Flowers was driving.

Other motorists had alerted authorities to a possible reckless driver weaving in and out of traffic.

Waugh is charged with two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide, two counts of serious injury by vehicle, two separate counts of driving under the influence, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and driving without a license.

Waugh also was hurt in the crash and was airlifted to Memorial University Health Center with life-threatening injuries. He was arrested Nov. 12 and remains in the Effingham County Jail without bond.

Arraignment has been set for Feb. 5.
