Effingham County 4-H Bee Club presents an opportunity for its members to experience first-hand what it’s like to be a beekeeper.

The club covers honeybee topics ranging from A-Z in beekeeping. Their meetings are monthly and run from January-June, ending with a segment where kids get to harvest their very own honey crop. The 4-H Bee Club consists of two parts: An indoor classroom and an outdoor classroom.

The indoor classroom is an educational time of equipping, training, and learning beekeeping basics, and the outdoor classroom is more of a hands-on and “learn by doing” concept within the 4-H apiary.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
