Team members from the Effingham Career Academy’s Architecture and Design lab and students from business classes at both high schools recently participated in a new project organized by local logistic industry leaders. Called “Follow the Container,” the program gives students a sneak peak into not only what’s shipped in a container, but also how the containers come off the ship, through the port, over the road, and into and out of the warehouse.

The field trip was designed to enlighten students about the world of logistics in the Savannah area and expose them to the many career opportunities available. The project organizers hope that after being exposed to the diversity of the logistics industry, students can better focus on a particular area of interest and plan their educational roadmap accordingly.

The program began with a guided tour of the Georgia Ports Authority where students watched a container being unloaded from a steamship onto a truck and then taken through customs and security.  They followed the container as it traveled over the road to a warehouse where it was docked, unloaded, palletized, repackaged and readied for cross docking and then shipped out to the customer.

In addition to following the container, students heard brief presentations by employees of the Georgia Ports Authority, Port City Logistics, LLC, Freightliner Trucks and Savannah Technical College.
