On Jan. 16, Ebenezer Elementary participated in the Effingham County Multiplication Challenge.

Students in third, fourth and fifth grade had to complete 90 multiplication facts under a strict time frame. Fourth and fifth graders were given three minutes to complete the facts, while third graders were given four minutes. Students are required to not only know the facts, but to know them quickly.

Principal Beth Kight presented a Principal’s Math Club trophy to each student who achieved a 90 percent or higher mastery level. EES presented trophies to 22 third graders, 48 fourth graders and 62 fifth graders at a short assembly on Feb. 20. The students and teachers will continue to work to maintain and improve their scores.

The next Multiplication Challenge is set for April 2.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
