Retired Educators receive awards, raise funds for scholarship

The Effingham County Retired Educators held their annual banquet awards luncheon at Ebenezer Retreat Center on May 27. Speakers were state Sen. Jack Hill and state Reps. Jon Burns and Buddy Carter.  Entertainment was provided by new retiree, Aileen Tuten, and daughter, Susan Hartzog.

Peggy Varnell received the GREA Leadership Award, and Patsy Zeigler received the GREA Community Service Award.

The Scholarship Award was presented to Melissa Yarbrough and Lisa Wilson. This award was presented by committee person, Beverly Hathaway, Elizabeth Zipperer, Peggy Varnell and Carolyn Kessler.

A silent auction was held to raise money for next year’s scholarship.

Effingham County High School introduced its new mascot, Rowdy the Rebel, this week. Inspired by popular sports mascots, Rowdy will appear at school events, pep rallies, and games, giving students a fresh way to engage and celebrate school spirit.
