Chamber, SCV bringing Civil War event to Rincon

A new event with a Civil War twist is coming to Rincon on May 18.

The “Civil War Experience,” presented by Fuller Chevrolet, is being planned by the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce and the Sons of Confederate Veterans, along with a committee of local non-profit groups.

Chamber Director Rick Lott said that this is a new festival and event area for the city of Rincon and that its size and location off Highway 21 right next to Lowe’s and across the street from Wal-Mart should help its first year to be a big one.

“We are planning this as a fun event for the whole family, whether you are into the Civil War or not,” said Lott.

He also said the event will include children’s activities, food and arts and crafts vendors among other things.

“The great thing about this new site is that it gives us so much space that we will be able to have parking right onsite for everyone — no shuttle needed,” Lott added. “And because we have so much space to use, we can position the Civil War encampment away from all the more modern vendors and games and give it an authentic look. The cannon and rifle firings really get everybody excited at these kinds of events and make it so much fun for the kids especially.”

The Civil War Experience will offer free admission and the event will be selling Coke products and water to offset expenses. A number of local non-profit groups will be on hand explaining to the public what their mission is.

Sponsors and vendors are now being signed up for this day-long event. For more information or applications, email or call the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce. ricklott@effinghamcounty.com or 754-3301.

The Civil War Experience is presented by Fuller Chevrolet and sponsored by Effingham Health System, Coca Cola, The Effingham Chamber, and others.
