On the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Effingham County first responders were recognized prior to Wednesday's South Effingham-Effingham County softball game at Rebel Field.

Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

As first responders assembled along the first base line, the public-address announcer said, "As we come together as one community, please help us to honor the men and women who put their lives in danger day-in, day-out, to protect our community, our schools and our children. Thank you for the sacrifice you give every day to keep us safe."
