Chamber majority backs move to Rincon
Effingham Chamber of Commerce

SPRINGFIELD — The Effingham County Chamber of Commerce is packing a lot of support for an impending move.

The chamber was set to leave its current digs at 520 W. 3rd St. to join the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) at 800-200 Towne Park East in Rincon. During its meeting Thursday afternoon, the IDA, whose current office is for sale and includes the chamber as a tenant, approved the relocation but a lease accord broke down Monday.

“We surveyed our board members on what they thought about staying in Springfield and what they thought about moving to Rincon,” Chamber CEO Andy Cripps said during the meeting, “Three-quarters of them said the move to Rincon is beneficial. We have about 125 of our members in Rincon and about 50 in Springfield.

“We are not turning our back on Springfield by any means. So much good is happening in downtown Springfield and we want to help accelerate that.”

On behalf of the chamber board, Cripps voiced appreciation to the IDA members for the opportunity to continue their close relationship.

He said, “We want to express A — our gratitude for our partnership that we’ve had — and our support for moving forward.”
