A 5-year-old Effingham County boy is in serious condition after being attacked by a neighbor’s dog shortly before noon today, according to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.

The boy was inside a neighbor’s house on Hampton Court when the pit bull terrier mauled the child’s face and legs, ECSO spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.

One adult was inside the home and was able to get the dog off the boy, take the dog outside and call the sheriff’s office, Ehsanipoor said. The child airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center with “serious injuries.”

Ehsanipoor added that the dog’s owner is cooperating with investigators. The dog is in ECSO custody and will be quarantined as investigators look into its history and shot records.
