Commissioners to ponder water rates

Rates for Effingham County’s water customers may be headed up.

Savannah Industrial and Domestic, which provides the county with its drinking water, is raising rates by another 5 cents per 1,000 gallons. Savannah I&D raised its rates last year by 6 cents, but commissioners opted then not to pass that rate hike along to its consumers.

The county is charged the retail rate for customers inside the Savannah city limits.

“Our rates are based on Savannah’s rates from 2009,” county engineer Steve Liotta said.
