Arrest made in home invasion

An Effingham County man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a Springfield home last month.

Antonial Kirkland, 19, of Guyton was charged Wednesday with two counts of armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of kidnapping, three counts of false imprisonment, burglary, cruelty to children, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

According to investigators, two men wearing masks and armed with handguns entered a Mockingbird Drive house shortly after midnight on April 24. The gunmen came in through an unlocked screen door.

The suspects demanded money from two adults who were in the living room, and took an undisclosed amount of cash. The house did not appear to be a random target for the robbery, according to the ECSO.

“The victims in this crime were specifically targeted and the investigation is ongoing,” said ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

Along with the two adults, children were inside the home during the armed robbery, according to Ehsanipoor. One child was in the living room with the adults and other children were in a back bedroom.

“Two adults and one kid were being held at gunpoint while the robbery was taking place,” Ehsanipoor said.

No one was injured.

Kirkland was already in the Effingham County Jail, after being arrested April 30 on a probation violation. The charges related to the armed robbery were added Wednesday.

Investigators “have solid leads” on finding the other suspect and Kirkland is cooperating, Ehsanipoor said.
