Effingham County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a South Carolina man who is accused of driving his car into a convenience store and then fleeing the scene.

Shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday, deputies responded to Mighty Mikes Hot Stop convenience store on Highway 80 at Old River Road on a report of a vehicle that had crashed through a convenience store. Reports indicated that the driver then fled the scene going toward Old River Road.

Patrol deputies were in the area and located the suspect, who was driving a GMC Jimmy, and his vehicle a short time later and arrested Jonathan Charles Mckenzie, 23, of Hardeeville, S.C.

Mckenzie’s vehicle was spotted by a deputy and he was stopped on Ogeechee River Drive. Mckenzie was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident and several other traffic charges.

The store sustained extensive structural damage. The business was open at that time. There were no injuries reported.
