Effingham County sheriff’s deputies and investigators arrested a Rincon woman Thursday who was wanted on charges of identity theft and financial transaction card fraud.

Deputies were on Acorn Street looking for Angela Smiley, 43, and saw her traveling in the area. After they initiated a traffic stop, Smiley fled, leading deputies on a pursuit down Lexington Avenue.

Her vehicle left the road and she struck a utility pole at Lexington and 4th Street. Smiley then took off on foot, and deputies used a taser to apprehend as she resisted arrest.

Smiley is being charged with financial identity fraud, financial transaction card theft, fleeing and attempting to elude officers, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, reckless driving and several other traffic charges. She is being held in the Effingham County Jail.
