Done deal: County commissioners OK takeover of Guyton fire services
Fire rescue

SPRINGFIELD — It's official. The City of Guyton falls under Effingham County Fire Rescue's umbrella of protection.

Duding its Tuesday meeting, the Effingham County Board of Commissioners agreed to take over fire services in Guyton after its fire department collapsed due to a shortage of personnel. Guyton had one paid firefighter and a handful of dependable volunteers.

The Guyton Fire Department’s lone full-time employee will join Effingham Fire Rescue. Its volunteers will be required to apply for jobs and meet county standards.

All fire fees collected in Guyton will be directed to Effingham County.

During its Sept. 10 meeting, the Guyton City Council approved the 12-month arrangement that features an automatic renewal. The City of Guyton can opt out provided it gives advanced notice.
