An Effingham County man died from injuries sustained in a Friday evening crash on Highway 119, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Clarence Taplin, 78, of Springfield died Sunday evening at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah from injuries suffered in the wreck on Highway 119 and Mud Road in Bulloch County, Trooper Hunter Oglesby said.

Jestine Roberson, 75, of Brooklet died in the crash Friday when a vehicle ran a stop sign and struck a church van belonging to Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Tusculum, according to the GSP.

The van’s driver, Harold Jones, 58, of Church Road in Springfield, remains in serious condition at Memorial, Oglesby said. A juvenile passenger of the van was released over the weekend.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the van, Christopher Dyal, 30, of Brooklet, was driving on Mud Road around 6:55 p.m. Friday when he failed to stop at the intersection with Highway 119, according to GSP Sr. Trooper Brian Scott. The vehicle struck the church van as it traveled on Highway 119, Scott said.

Dyal suffered two broken ankles, two broken legs, a broken back and broken neck, Oglesby said, and he remains at Memorial in serious condition.

Two Air Evac helicopters, a LifeStar helicopter and three ambulances responded to the scene Friday to transport those involved.

Charges are pending and the crash remains under investigation by the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team, Oglesby said.
