Hidden gem seeking attention from tourists

PORT WENTWORTH—Effingham County is hoping to tap into Savannah and the Coastal Empire’s steady stream of tourists.

Thursday morning at the Georgia Visitors Center, Chamber of Commerce officials, with help from local historical organizations, showed off a new display case containing artifacts and topped with informational rack cards about what the county has to offer.

“Savannah has 6 million visitors a year, and we want to capitalize on that,” Chamber President Randy Shearouse said.

Rincon City Council Approves First Pay Raise in 14 Years

Rincon City Council voted unanimously Monday to approve its first pay raise in 14 years, increasing council members’ pay to $750 per month and the mayor’s pay to $950 per month starting next year. The raises will apply to those elected in November, when three council seats and the mayor’s office will be on the ballot.
