Effingham County drivers trying to get home from I-95 may find the often clogged exit at Highway 21 a little easier to negotiate soon.

State Rep. Ann Purcell (R-Rincon) told attendees at the Effingham Chamber of Commerce’s annual Eggs and Issues breakfast Wednesday that the state Department of Transportation has been given the go-ahead to turn the emergency lane on I-95 northbound into an extra exit lane, following federal approval of the idea.

“That has been our holdup the last nine to 12 months,” she said.

Purcell said she believes something will be done by the start of January to turn the emergency lane stretching from the Meinhard Road overpass to the I-95/Highway 21 juncture into another deceleration lane for exiting traffic. There is still room adjacent to the current emergency lane for another emergency lane, she said.
