The South Effingham girls basketball team played with heavy hearts tonight against Coffee after losing one of their teammates this week.
Carly Craven, 16, a junior at SEHS, died Wednesday.
“Students and staff at SEHS have been very saddened by the death of Carly Craven, and the somber atmosphere at the school reflects this sadness,” South Effingham Principal Mark Winters said today. “There have been tears and hugs as students and staff find strength from each other to deal with this tragic loss.”
Visitation will be Monday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Springfield. Funeral services will follow at 3:30.
As a final tribute, SEHS classmates took to Twitter to get Craven’s name noticed by her favorite singer, Lana Del Rey. To spread the word, people tweeted @LanaDelRey with the hashtag #Carly Craven.
According to tweets, Craven “loved her music unconditionally” and was planning to attend one of Del Rey’s concerts this year.
Their efforts paid off, as Del Rey posted this tweet tonight: “Rest in peace to the beautiful angel that lost her life in a car accident. Lana loves you, angel. She's thinking of u #CarlyCraven.”
The many tweets in Craven’s memory included these words from Russell Smith: “She was nothing short of an angel. Fly high, Beautiful!”
