Spring concert to feature classical pieces, Quincy Jones tribute

The Effingham Community Orchestra will present its spring concert Sunday, March 9 at the Mars Theatre, 106 S. Laurel St., in Springfield. The concert begins at 4 p.m. and will also feature an art exhibit by Effingham Artists.

The concert is free and monetary donations are accepted.

“We will be performing a collection of Romantic-era or early 20th century musical selections including the Overture to Giuseppe Verdi's opera: La Forza Del Destino (“The Power of Destiny”); Two arias by Giacomo Puccini: "O mio babbino caro" ("Oh my dear Papa”) from the opera Gianni Schicchi and "Nessum dorma" ("Let no one sleep") from his opera Turandot,” said Dr. Charles Patterson, musical director for the Effingham County Orchestra.

The full orchestra will also perform Symphony No. 2 in D Major by Johannes Brahms.

The jazz band will start the concert with a tribute to the composer Quincy Jones who passed away Nov. 3, 2024, at the age of 91. During his career Jones earned multiple Grammy and Tony awards for his music and music production.

The Effingham County jazz band will perform Killer Joe by Benny Golsen, arranged by Quincy Jones; Moanin' by Bobby Timmons, arranged by Quincy Jones; For Lena and Lennie by Quincy Jones; and Soul Bossa Nova (theme to Ausin Powers) by Quincy Jones.
