Mustangs face winner-take-all game in region finale

GUYTON -- Richmond Hill's offense came alive early and the Wildcats overpowered South Effingham 13-4 on Wednesday night to set up a decisive third game for the Region 2-AAAAAA baseball championship on Friday in Richmond Hill.

Glynn Academy, which held tiebreakers over the Wildcats and Mustangs entering the final week of the regular season, but lost to Statesboro for the second straight game on Wednesday.

SEHS (21-8, 12-5 Region 2-AAAAAA) could have clinched with a win Wednesday but Richmond Hill quickly nixed that thought. The Wildcats 

(15-13, 12-5 Region 2-AAAAAA) scored seven runs while sending 11 men to the plate in the first inning. Four of the first six visitors doubled.

SEHS (21-8, 12-5) chipped away at the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. A double steal plated one run and Hunter Walthour's single brought in another.

The Mustangs manufactured another run in the second inning and ended their scoring on Zach Zorbo's pinch-hit home run in the fifth inning.

Pitcher Avery Sikes gave SEHS 3 1/3 shutout innings in relief before being nicked for two runs in his fourth inning.
