The top of the Region 2-AAAAAA softball standings took a turn Saturday after South Effingham swept a doubleheader from the previous region leader Grovetown 11-1 and 9-2.

The Mustangs (16-4, 11-2) lost to the Warriors 5-3 on Aug. 24 but had few problems this time on the road. Bailey Kendziorski pitched a two-hitter in the first game, which was stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Jaden Burns had three hits and drove in two runs and Emma Darrow, Kenzie Ergle and Madison Mills each had two hits. Hailey Roman had a hit and drove in three runs and Darrow, Ergle and Peighton Capwell each had two RBI.

In the nightcap, Izzy Wilkins pitched five scoreless innings in relief of Haylee Johnson to pick up the win.

Darrow had three hits and Burns and Ergle had two hits apiece. Kendziorski had a hit and drove in two runs.

Entering this week, SEHS and Effingham County (18-3, 11-2) had a one-game lead over Grovetown (13-8-1, 10-3) in the region standings. ECHS played host to the Warriors in a doubleheader on Sept. 27.

The Mustangs and Rebels have their last head-to-head meeting Oct. 6 in Guyton.
