Lakeside coach faces action for last play

Lakeside-Evans coach Jody Grooms will be disciplined by the school for the Panthers’ final offensive play in their game last week with the Effingham County Rebels, according to reports.

After the ball was snapped, the Panthers had a player run off the field and another ran onto the field. Quarterback Chad Chandler’s pass was intended for the ineligible receiver, but it was intercepted.

ECHS officials notified Lakeside administrators of the play but did not file a formal complaint.

“The only thing we did was we contacted their principal,” ECHS Principal Yancy Ford said. “That was done out of courtesy. I’d want to know if something like that had taken place.”

Ford said the infraction was noticeable and noticed by many people.

“I was just shocked when I saw it on film,” he said. “I’m very thankful we have coaches who teach character and strive for the kids to do their best, win or lose.”

The game was the final game of the season for the Panthers, who finished 3-7.
