Effingham County’s wrestling team advanced to the state quarterfinals with a tough 37-30 victory over Lee County in the Class AAAA state duals at the Macon Centreplex on Friday morning.
The Rebels met the winner of the Marist-Eastside match Friday evening.
The South Effingham Mustangs won their first-round match in Class AAA when Cairo failed to show up. That put the Mustangs in the quarterfinals against the winner of the Cass-Oconee County matchup.
The quarterfinals and semifinals were scheduled for Friday night and the bulk of the consolation matches got under way Saturday, with the semis and finals set for the afternoon. The state championship round in all five classes was set for Saturday at 7:45 p.m.
Stockbridge is the reigning Class AAAA state duals champion and Gilmer is the defending Class AAA state duals champ. The event has been conducted since 2002.
