GUYTON – South Effingham couldn’t have had a better start to its region schedule, but ended the week on a skid with 2-1 and 10-3 losses to defending region champion Evans March 14.

South, a 5-0 winner in Game 1, lost the three-game series two games to one.

Each team in Region 2-6A plays six three-game series that count in the region standings so the Mustangs have time to make up lost ground, but falling to a contender has an added negative consequence of losing a tiebreaker if they were tied at the end of the season.

South (9-6, 1-2 Region 2-6A) now will try to feast on Lakeside, a team in sixth place in the seven-team region.

Lakeside (3-9, 2-7) was outscored 35-1 while losing all three games to Glynn Academy last week.

Game 1 between the Mustangs and Panthers is Tuesday (March 19) at Lakeside with a doubleheader scheduled for Friday, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., (March 22) in Guyton.

ECHS falls to Calvary in non-region affair

Effingham County had seven days off and the inactivity showed in a 5-1 non-region loss to visiting Calvary last Friday night.

Two hit batsmen and an error fueled Calvary’s three-run third inning to help the Cavaliers pull away.

The Rebels called on six pitchers to get some work. Offensively, Q King had the team’s only two hits.

ECHS entered the week with a 5-9 record, 2-1 in Region 2-6A play. The Rebels meet Evans for a three-game region series. Game 1 is Tuesday (March 19) in Springfield with a doubleheader slated for Evans on Friday.

SEHS-ECHS face off in lacrosse

The boys lacrosse teams of South Effingham and Effingham County begin their rivalry today (Wednesday, March 20) at ECHS’ Rebel Field with the first of two matches this season.

Today’s game at 5 p.m. will be a non-region contest with the teams’ second game on April 19 counting in the Class 5A/6A-Area 7 standings.

SEHS enters with a 7-1 overall record; ECHS is 1-4.

The Rebels and Mustangs girls will play Thursday at SEHS at 5:30 p.m. The ECHS girls are 4-3, South, 2-2.
