Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church is proud to announce “God on Broadway 2007,” scheduled for Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28.

“God on Broadway” is a series of worship services using the themes of Broadway musicals patterned around a sermon that is based upon that particular musical. The service contains songs and music from the musical. The crux of the worship service is brought out by the Rev. Billy Hester in his stimulating and sometimes rather amusing sermons centered on the basic theme of the musical. “God on Broadway” is a different and creative approach in presenting the gospel as Rev. Hester intertwines the music to the words of Jesus Christ, whether it is about temptation from the devil as in “Damn Yankees” to forgiveness in “Les Miserables” to getting along with one's neighbors as in “Oklahoma.”

The vibrant and growing choir of Asbury Memorial, directed by Ray Ellis, work diligently with pride in the arrangements that are performed from each musical. “God on Broadway 2007” will highlight “Pippin” (Oct. 7), “Rent” (Oct. 14), “The Fantasticks” (Oct. 21) and concluding with “Wicked” (Oct. 28).

Rev. Hester and his wife, Cheri, are both veteran actors from Broadway and off Broadway. Billy and Cheri bring their skills and talents to a welcoming congregation and community. The first series started in October 2005.

“It’s very fulfilling to see people’s lives touched and transformed by the blending of theology and theatre” said Rev. Hester.

Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church is at 1008 East Henry St. The worship services begin at 11:15 a.m. and admission is free. Please visit www.asburymemorial.org for segments from the 2005 and 2006 series. For more information, contact Joe Driggers at (912) 596-6208.
