Deputies charge Guyton man in child abuse case

Effingham County sheriff's deputies have arrested a man in connection with life-threatening injuries suffered by an 8-month-child Thursday afternoon.

ECSO investigators took Jonathan Oliver, 19, into custody at Memorial Health University Medical Center late Thursday evening. Oliver has been charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and cruelty to children in the first degree.

According to sheriff's reports, deputies responded to a home on Little McCall Road around 1:30 Thursday afternoon on a report of a child not breathing who had possibly drowned. Deputies and emergency personnel on the scene administered CPR, and the child was taken to Effingham Hospital. The boy was later flown to Memorial, where he remains in critical condition.

The incident is still under investigation.

Two men were arrested Tuesday in Eden after a domestic dispute led to a standoff. Deputies say George Driggers, 47, threatened his girlfriend and law enforcement with a gun, then barricaded himself inside a home. His father, Alford Driggers, 80, was also charged for allegedly threatening deputies.
