ECSO traffic unit to hit roads

An Effingham County Sheriff’s unit dedicated solely to traffic could be on the roads by the end of next month.

County commissioners, in a 3-2 vote Tuesday, approved four additional deputies for the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office’s planned traffic enforcement unit. Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie said he hopes to have the unit fully staffed by mid-November.

“If we can get it in before the holidays, we’ll be better off,” he said.

The ECSO had a pilot traffic enforcement detail in February, using the shortest month of the year to give itself an idea of what it could look forward to with a full-time traffic unit. McDuffie said that with only seven road deputies per shift, he is bombarded with calls for more deputies on some of the county’s busiest roads, such as Hodgeville and Goshen roads.
