South Effingham’s volleyball team got its season off to a strong start, taking two of three from Toombs County and sweeping Liberty County in a three-way match Tuesday at South Effingham.

The Lady Mustangs defeated the Lady Bulldogs 25-20, 20-25 and 25-14 and breezed through the Lady Panthers 25-11, 25-10.

“I’m pretty excited,” coach Eric Harris said. “We played well against Liberty County, but they gave us the opportunity to. They hit a lot of high balls. I was worried about Toombs, but for the first match of the year, I’ll take it.”

It will be a busy week for Harris and his veteran team. They were scheduled to host Class A power Savannah Country Day and Swainsboro on Thursday and will welcome Effingham County today as part of all-Effingham day.

In addition to the two high schools squaring off for the first time this year, all three middle school teams will be in action as well. Effingham County Middle School committed to playing, rounding out the schedule.

“It’s going to be a crazy day,” Harris said. “We should have all the county’s volleyball teams in the gym. It should be really neat.”
