The football coach who used an illegal play against the Effingham County Rebels has been relieved of his duties as athletic director at his school, according to the Augusta Chronicle.

Lakeside-Evans coach Jody Grooms had a player run off the bench and onto the field 40 yards downfield after the play had begun was stripped of his AD duties Tuesday night by the Columbia County Board of Education.

“He could be expecting more,” Superintendent Charles Nagle told the Chronicle. “This was the immediate decision, not the final decision.”

After receiving a written recommendation from Lakeside Principal Jeff Carney, Nagle is expected to make his final decision today or Friday.

“This is not an easy thing,” Nagle told the Chronicle. “This is a decision that splits the communities. I am totally embarrassed for our school system.”

Effingham won the game, Lakeside’s  last of the season, 7-0. Lakeside finished the season 3-7.
