Effingham County High School senior Emily Woods, the daughter of Jim and Lisa Woods of Springfield, has been honored by Georgia Public Broadcasting as a 2010-11 Academic All-Star Athlete. Woods was nominated by ECHS Principal Yancy Ford, who presented her with a plaque at class night. The school also received a plaque, which will be placed in the ECHS trophy case.

In order to be nominated and selected, Woods had to meet all the criteria established by the GPB awards committee. Captain of the ECHS cheerleading squad for the past four years, Woods lettered in cheerleading and also maintained a GPA of 3.7 or higher. She enrolled in advanced placement classes, scoring 3 or better on the final exam, and she also met the stringent criteria for scores on the SAT and ACT. An objective panel selected 72 winners for the 2010-11 school year.

In addition to cheerleading, Woods has been a member of the Youth Advisory Council, the Spanish Honor Society, the Calculus Club, the Beta Club and the Future Georgia Educators Association. The Woods’ are also active members of Springfield United Methodist Church. Woods will attend Georgia Southern University in the fall and plans to major in Business and Marketing Management.

Two Academic All-Star Athletes are recognized on-air each week on GPB Television and online. To view profiles of all the award winners, go to www.gpb.org/academic-all-star-athletes.
