Missed days from TS Debby won’t be made up

Special to the Herald

She tried and failed. So there.

The start of school for Effingham County students was delayed from Aug. 8 to Aug. 12 due to TS Debby. The storm also caused educators to miss their final two days of pre-planning. The missed days will not have to be made up.

“I am grateful that we all remained safe during Tropical Storm Debby,” Effingham County Schools Superintendent Dr. Yancy Ford said on Aug. 16. “The Board has approved the waiver for the two staff days missed on Aug. 6 and 7 during pre-planning, and these days will not need to be made up. Additionally, the Board has approved the waiver for the two student days missed on Aug. 8 and 9.”

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
