Mr. and Mrs. Philip Varner of Odessa, Mo., announce the engagement of their daughter, Brooke Ashlyn Varner, to Jesse Daniel Smith, son of Donald and Carrie Smith of Guyton.

The future bride is a 2005 graduate of Odessa High School in Odessa, Mo. In 2009, she earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Missouri. The future groom is a 2004 graduate of South Effingham High School. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in finance.

Both are employed as bank examiners with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The couple met through mutual friends during a work trip to Washington, D.C. Jesse proposed at the top of a mountain on Jan. 4, 2013, while the couple was enjoying a family ski trip in Keystone, Colo.

A November 2013 wedding is planned in Tybee Island. The couple will reside in Kansas City, Mo.
