Two air conditioning theft suspects were arrested Friday following an investigative stop by an Effingham County Sheriff’s deputy.

A deputy observed a suspicious truck in the area of Ebenezer Road and Highway 21 with an air conditioner in the back and with what appeared to be freshly cut copper wiring, according to sheriff’s reports.

Effingham County Sheriff’s Office investigators later determined that the air conditioning unit, valued at $5,000, was stolen from a residence on Lowground Road in Effingham County.

Mathew Sorg, 28, of Springfield, and William Wilson, 27, of Rincon, were both arrested and charged with felony theft by taking and possession of tools during the commission of a crime.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the suspects are connected to other thefts in the area.
